MTA Awards Historical Information
The Who's Who Award is the prerogative of the president and voting members of the BOD exclusively. It seeks to recognize someone who has worked diligently for trappers (particularly within the Association) generally behind the scenes. Hosting district leadership of convention, DNR liaisons, legislature, trapping supply businesses, news media, elected officials in the State legislature, MTA members/directors/chairs, etc., have all received this award at one time or another over the years.

There were traditionally four President's Awards, but the President can choose to award all or none at his discretion; three to individuals that the President seeks to recognize for their contributions to the Association publicly, and one Family Award to recognize service to the Association above the call of duty (generally husband and wife but at times several members of the same family), etc. The President can divide these four up in any order or recognition distinction, i.e., four Families, four individuals, or even districts - there is no "policy" regarding such matters. I took one of the President's awards off the table when I was president. I created  The MTA Education Award that was presented to an individual (or group) that has been exemplary in their efforts in Trapper Education in particular but may also be presented to an individual or group that has taken the lead in Outreach efforts such as giving presentations to schools, public venues, sporting groups, youth activities, MTA Booth service at sport shows, fairs, etc.

Sadly, the Lady Trapper of the Year often went to a supportive spouse who didn't trap, which somewhat defeats the recognition. Perhaps a separate Spouse Award might be included that would be a more fitting award title under those circumstances?

Previously  Trapper of the Year, Lady Trapper of the Year, and Junior Trapper of the Year nominations were received either in written form to the President, Secretary, or member of the BOD or orally nominated and voted on during the General Membership Meeting at the summer convention. This has been handled through an appointed committee to avoid last-minute nominations at the convention just so "someone" would get a plaque. It's probably better if no nominations are made to let them go unawarded than to give them to someone undeserving and defeat the underlying purpose of recognizing individual service to the Association.
