Leo Jewett trapped most of his life, and was a member of both MTA and Furtakers of America since these organizations were formed. He nearly always gave a demonstration at MTA conventions on his famous dirt hole or snaring sets. Leo might not ever have served in an MTA office (the Jewett family was always active in Furtakers offices), but he was active in many other ways. In the early years of the MTA awards Leo was a recipient of the 'Trapper of the Year" award. He was also featured on the front cover of The Trapper (August, 1977).

He gave many presentations to 4-H and school c1assrooms. He was honored with a special award from Minnesota DNR Commissioner Joe Alexander in 1979 for his educational endeavors. Leo worked for the Minnesota DNR live-trapping wolves, coyote, bobcats, and fox for a radio telemetry project. He was sought out by fur buyers who knew Leo's skills at putting up fine pelts. Leo was for years among the most prominent trappers in MTA, and was always willing to provide one or more of his trapping secrets to someone else, especially youth.

Leo was an excellent coyote trapper--perhaps in his time, the best in the state. He was a gentleman, a communicator, and an educator, even to the extent of buying his own slide projector to use in his talks to school children all over Northern Minnesota. His positive influence on youth will live on for generations to come.
